"Lot's of ideas to help students at different level needs in all subject areas" - Lynn Gregory, Middle School Math/Science Teacher
Middle/High School - Content Area Process
What is the Goal?
Significantly increase achievement of ALL students in every content area class.
How is the Goal accomplished?
The Literacy First consultant works to build the capacity of the teachers and building leadership team to continue the effective implementation of the Content Area Process for many years. The teachers significantly improve their instructional skills so students better comprehend the content presented during each class period. Principals strengthen their instructional leadership skills and learn how to monitor and support the critical instructional elements necessary for outstanding student achievement.
The structure used to accomplish all of this includes the following:
1. Content area teachers voluntarily participate in five days of Content Area professional development spread out during the school year. Within three years all the content area teachers in a middle/high school will have participated in the professional development.
2. The Literacy First consultant provides 24 coaching/consulting days to the building over three years. These days are designed to monitor, support and hold teachers and building leadership accountable for full and effective implementation of the skills and processes presented during the professional development.
3. Content Area professional development includes:
  a. How to structure lessons to ensure that students are taught in a systematic and explicit manner
  b. Instructional strategies to fully engage every student in the active manipulation of the content presented
  c. Instructional strategies to significantly increase student vocabulary
  d. Comprehension strategies that are customized to meet the needs of content area instruction
  e. Strategic reading/thinking tools that are customized to meet the needs of content area instruction
  f. Strategies to cause students to be metacognitive about the content presented
4. Participation in the annual Leadership Institute to develop instructional leadership skills.
What are the results?
Principals in Literacy First schools in Florida, North Carolina and Washington all report significant increase of students passing state or nationally normed assessment as a result of implementing the Content Area Process.
