Middle School/High School - Intensive Reading Process

What is the Goal?
|
|
Accelerate reading achievement of students performing two or more grades below
level so they will be performing on grade level within three years.
|

How is the Goal accomplished?
|
|
The Literacy First consultant works to develop expert reading teachers and the
capacity of the building leadership team to continue the effective
implementation of the Intensive Reading Process for many years. Designated
teachers significantly improve their understanding of how to teach the critical
reading skills and processes to accelerate student reading achievement.
Principals strengthen their instructional leadership skills and learn how to
monitor and support the critical elements necessary to accelerate student
reading achievement. The structure used to accomplish all of this includes the
following.

Building
principal identifies specific teachers to be trained in the Intensive Reading
Process. |
| 2. |
Schedule
is developed for students performing 2 or more grades below level to have 90
minutes, five days per week of Intensive Reading instruction in a 20:1
student-teacher ratio. |

The
Literacy First consultant provides 13 days of intensive reading professional
development over three years to the designated reading teachers. |
| 4. |
The
Literacy First consultant provides 24 coaching/consulting days over three
years. These days are designed to monitor, support and hold the designated
reading teachers and building leadership team accountable for full and
effective implementation of the skills and processes presented during the
professional development. |

form and use flexible skill groups so students are taught at their "zone of

structure reading lessons to ensure that students are taught in a systematic
and explicit manner

use learning stations to provide reinforcement of reading skills and processes
taught in flexible skill groups

e. |
Curriculum
includes phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension
skills, strategic reading tools and metacognitive processes

Use of
My Data First, a customized data management and analysis system. |
| 7. |
Participation
in the annual Leadership Institute to develop instructional leadership skills. |

What are the results?
|
Highlands County - student-reading achievement was accelerated as
evidenced by 1.5 to 3 years growth on the reading FCAT in one year.
Lake County - Mt. Dora MS had 71% and Eustis MS had 76% of their
students move out of the bottom quartile on the reading FCAT.
