Literacy First is a vital part in developing reading programs for at-risk students" - Dorothy Werner, Middle School Assistant Principal
Middle School/High School - Intensive Reading Process
What is the Goal?
Accelerate reading achievement of students performing two or more grades below level so they will be performing on grade level within three years.
How is the Goal accomplished?
The Literacy First consultant works to develop expert reading teachers and the capacity of the building leadership team to continue the effective implementation of the Intensive Reading Process for many years. Designated teachers significantly improve their understanding of how to teach the critical reading skills and processes to accelerate student reading achievement. Principals strengthen their instructional leadership skills and learn how to monitor and support the critical elements necessary to accelerate student reading achievement. The structure used to accomplish all of this includes the following.
1. Building principal identifies specific teachers to be trained in the Intensive Reading Process.
2. Schedule is developed for students performing 2 or more grades below level to have 90 minutes, five days per week of Intensive Reading instruction in a 20:1 student-teacher ratio.
3. The Literacy First consultant provides 13 days of intensive reading professional development over three years to the designated reading teachers.
4. The Literacy First consultant provides 24 coaching/consulting days over three years. These days are designed to monitor, support and hold the designated reading teachers and building leadership team accountable for full and effective implementation of the skills and processes presented during the professional development.
5. Content of the training includes
  a. How to use formative reading assessment data to drive instruction
  b. how to form and use flexible skill groups so students are taught at their "zone of proximal development"
  c. How to structure reading lessons to ensure that students are taught in a systematic and explicit manner
  d. how to use learning stations to provide reinforcement of reading skills and processes taught in flexible skill groups
  e. Curriculum includes phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension skills, strategic reading tools and metacognitive processes
6. Use of My Data First, a customized data management and analysis system.
7. Participation in the annual Leadership Institute to develop instructional leadership skills.
What are the results?
