On April 27, 2011, the Leadership Team at Mountain View-Gotebo Public School, were pleased to share the importance of Literacy First in their school system. Superintendent, Andy Evans, along with Brad Logan, High School Principal, and Karen Mason, PreK-8 Principal, note that the professional development taught by Literacy First changed life at their schools for the better. “This, by far, has been the best professional development that we have participated in and can only be continued by the financial support from our Legislature. This training is ongoing and needed to continue supporting our schools that have trained and will be trained in the future.”
They further note, “We wouldn’t be where we are today without the Literacy First Process. We use it in every subject area.” The following data provides evidence to their success.

**Literacy First implemented April 2004
Karen Mason, a 33 year veteran in education and the Elementary Principal, highlighted that her “school utilizes data to drive the instruction of individual students. Literacy First validated our desire to incorporate a two-hour uninterrupted reading block and provided the tools that took the guesswork away and incorporated data-driven instruction.”
Mason also notes “Academic learning time is evident in our school. Phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension are the focus at our school. All have to be incorporated for success.” And she emphasizes, “A school does have to remember that the teachers make the difference.”
