Salina High Central - Salina, Kansas
Salina High Central completed their third year of Intensive Reading and Content Area implementation of the Literacy First process in 2006-2007. They began implementation in the 2004-2005 school year. They are 49% economically disadvantaged.
Percentages represent students performing in each of the given categories on the Kansas Reading Assessment - 11th Grade. 11th grade is the only grade assessed in high school.
After three years of implementation, Salina High Central has virtually reversed the percentages of students performing on the low end of the assessment versus students performing on the high end of the assessment. The percentage of students meeting standard increased from 46.8 to 89.4. The percentage of students performing Exemplary remains more than three times what it was before implementation of the Literacy First process.
After three years of implementation, Salina High Central went from having 15.6% less students than the state meet standard on the 11th grade reading assessment to having 12.4% more students than the state meet standard. The 42.6% increase in students meeting standard at Salina High Central from 2004 to 2007 translates to a gain of 28% relative to the state.
After implementation of the Literacy First process, performance for all student groups on the Kansas Reading Assessment has increased by at least 37%, and the achievement gap between the different student groups continues to close. Special Education students have made the most significant gains with a 59.5% increase in the percentage of students meeting standard from 2004 to 2007.
Middle Schools
Graham Middle School - Alamance-Burlington, North Carolina
Graham Middle School is currently in their third year of Content Area and Intensive Reading implementation of the Literacy First process. They began implementation in the 2005-2006 school year. They are 70% economically disadvantaged.

After two years of implementation, Graham Middle School went from having 13.7% less students than the state on grade level on the 6th through 8th grade reading assessment to having 5.8% less students than the state on grade level. The 6.2% increase in students meeting standard at Graham Middle School from 2005 to 2007 translates to a gain of 7.9% relative to the state.

After implementation of the Literacy First process, performance for all student groups on the ABCs End of Grade Reading Assessment has increased, and the achievement gap between the different student groups continues to close from a gap of 46.9% between the highest and lowest performing student groups to 34.3% between the highest and lowest performing groups.. Special Education students have made the most significant gains with a 17.5% increase in the percentage of students meeting standard from 2005 to 2007.
Arkansas City Middle School - Arkansas City, Kansas
Arkansas City Middle School is currently in their third year of Content Area implementation of the Literacy First process. They began implementation in the 2005-2006 school year. They are 56% economically disadvantaged.
Percentages represent students performing in each of the given categories on the Kansas Reading Assessment - 8th Grade. 8th grade is the only grade, in middle school, assessed since 2004. 6th and 7th grade began being assessed in 2006, the first year of implementation at Arkansas City Middle School.
After the first year of implementation, the percentage of students meeting standard or higher increased by 10.3. The percentage of students performing Exemplary remains almost three times what it was before implementation of the Literacy First process.
After only one year of implementation, Arkansas City Middle School went from having 4.3% less students than the state meet standard on the 8th grade reading assessment to having 7.6% more students than the state meet standard. The 12.6% increase in students meeting standard at Arkansas City Middle School from 2005 to 2006 translates to a gain of 11.9% relative to the state.
After implementation of the Literacy First process, performance for all student groups on the Kansas Reading Assessment has increased, and the achievement gap between the different student groups continues to close from a gap of 37.4% between the highest and lowest performing student groups to 21.2% between the highest and lowest performing groups. Special Education students have made the most significant gains with a 35.1% increase in the percentage of students meeting standard from 2004 to 2006.
In 2003-2004 and 2004-2005, there were less than 10 English Language Learners assessed in reading in the 8th grade.
Elementary Schools
Newlin Elementary School - Alamance-Burlington, North Carolina
North Graham Elementary School is currently in their third year of implementation of the Literacy First process. They began implementation in the 2005-2006 school year. Their student population is 79% economically disadvantaged.
After two years of implementation, Newlin Elementary went from having 9% less students than the state meet standard on the 3rd-5th grade ABCs End of Grade reading assessments to having 3.8% less students than the state meet standard. The 3.5% increase in students meeting standard at North Graham from 2005 to 2007 translates to a gain of 5.2% relative to the state.
After implementation of the Literacy First process, performance for two of the three lowest performing student groups increased more than 10% on the ABCs End of Grade Reading Assessment. The achievement gap between the different student groups is closing from a 44.2% difference between all of the student groups except Special Education to 16% between the highest and lowest performing groups excluding Special Education. Limited English Proficient students have made the most significant gains with a 26.4% increase in the percentage of students meeting standard from 2005 to 2007.
Roosevelt Elementary School - Arkansas City, Kansas
Roosevelt Elementary School is currently in their fourth year of implementation of the Literacy First process. They began implementation in the 2004-2005 school year. Their student population is 61.5% economically disadvantaged.
Percentages represent students performing in each of the given categories on the Kansas Reading Assessment - 5th Grade. 5th grade is the only grade, in elementary school, assessed since 2003. 3rd and 4th grade began being assessed in 2006.
After three years of implementation, the percentage of students performing Exemplary has increased 8.2%. The percentage of students meeting standard also increased 18.4%.
After three years of implementation, Roosevelt Elementary went from having 4.6% more students than the state meet standard on the 3rd grade reading assessment to having 14% more students than the state meet standard. The 18.4% increase in students meeting standard at Roosevelt from 2004 to 2007 translates to a gain of 9.4% relative to the state.
After implementation of the Literacy First process, performance for all student groups on the Kansas Reading Assessment has increased to more than 90% meeting standard, and the achievement gap between the different student groups continues to close. Special Education students have made the most significant gains with a 71.7% increase in the percentage of students meeting standard from 2006 to 2007.
